Han Shot First

If you understand my title then you are a true Star Wars fan. For those of you who don't understand, let me enlighten you...

The very first Star Wars movie came out in 1977. In that movie there is a scene featuring Han Solo, our swashbuckling hero, and Greedo, the bounty hunter. Han is in the Mos Eisley Cantina on Tatooine and runs into Greedo pointing a blaster (gun) at him. Greedo forces him back into his chair and then takes the chair across the table. They have a conversation about how Jabba the Hutt has put a bounty on Han's head and how Greedo is going to turn him in. Before he can do that however, Han shoots him from under the table. He gets up, flips a coin to the bartender and says "sorry about the mess" and walks out.

Not the most pivotal scene in the movie, but an informative one nonetheless. You get a glimpse of Han's character. You see his lack of morals and regard for life (at least that of bounty hunters).

In the 1997 remastered edition, this scene was altered to show that Greedo shoots first and then Han kills him in self-defense. This change is quite controversial in that it changes the character of Han. We need Han to be this moral-less character in order to make his transition to a hero in later movies more believable. Lucas tried to give his justification for the change, but it just doesn't work. Han shot first and will always shoot first. That's who he is and why we love him.
